Who do you think you are?

Greetings Gracepoint Family,

In The Joyful Christian, C. S. Lewis writes, “We may note in passing that [Jesus] was never regarded as a mere moral teacher. He did not produce that effect on any of the people who actually met Him. He produced mainly three effects: Hatred-Terror-Adoration. There was no trace of people expressing mild approval” (New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., 1977, 72, 74).

What we think about Jesus is the most important thing about us. Secondly, who we think we are in light of Christ can lead to spiritual growth. In his letter to the Colossian Church, the Apostle Paul asserts the supremacy and preeminence of Jesus Christ to combat the spreading virus of false teaching. This letter is a letter of hope. If our priority is Christ then He is our fixed point of hope in life, especially in difficult times. In Colossians 1:9-14 the Apostle Paul prays for, and reminds believers who we are and calls for our continued spiritual growth. A growing life prioritizes knowing God’s will, produces a worthy walk, and is empowered by God’s grace. No “mild approval” here, but great “adoration.”

Thankful for you all and praying for our spiritual growth in these days.

The Power of Hope II

We are entering our sixth week of sheltering in place and social distancing with the outlook being for more of the same in the coming weeks. The Easter holiday is over but as Darrell Bock, one of my professors in seminary, writes:

“In terms of new life and a new way of looking at life, Easter ultimately is not about a single day on the calendar for celebration and remembrance. It is about a way of life.

[Our] desire [for normalcy] proclaims the defiant hope of an end to our current traumatic trial with a plague. Defiant hope is what Easter is also about, but it is more–the hope of authentic, enduring life, even out of surrounding, omnipresent death. It reflects the urge to get life going again in ways that are far more normal that what being “sheltered in” requires.” –Darrell Bock, blogpost

Today’s message is entitled The Power of Hope and comes out of Colossians 1:1-8. Whether or not we are sheltered in place, quarantined, or distanced from one another, our spiritual growth must continue. This passage of scripture reminds us that we are a people of hope and that our hope in Jesus Christ, the preeminent One.

Blessings as you continue your journey in life.

Easter!

“He is Risen, He is Risen Indeed!”

From the Early Church era believers have continued to greet one another in this unique and powerful way. This Sunday, Easter 2020, our voices and lives still resound that great refrain because, we of all people have hope and God’s peace for our troubled anxious hearts. In the midst of the turbulence of Covid-19 that roils our sense of safety, security, and sufficiency our hearts can be troubled by uncertainty, anxiety, and despair. Today Jesus has a word for us by way of Peace for troubled hearts, a Promise for troubled hearts, and a Pathway to everlasting liberation from a troubled heart.

My prayer for you is that you and yours grow in faith today as you are engaged in God’s Word and that we all extend our hope in Christ to a very needy world.
