As they were confronted with the angel\u2019s appearance the words to them were \u201cDo not be afraid.\u201d This phrase appears four times in the Christmas narratives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0\u201c\u2026 an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, <em>do not fear<\/em> \u2026\u201d (Matt. 1:20)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u201cBut the angel said to him, \u2018<em>Do not be afraid<\/em>, Zechariah \u2026\u201d (Luke 1:13)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u201cAnd the angel said to her, \u2018<em>Do not be afraid<\/em>, Mary, for you have found favor with God.\u2019\u201d (Luke 1:30)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u201cAnd the angel said, \u2018<em>Fear not<\/em>, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.\u2019\u201d (Luke 2:10)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once again, I was struck by what John Stott called \u201cthe up to the minute relevance of the Bible.\u201d Underneath the surface of frantic busyness, frenzied consumerism, social media posting, political ranting, and moralistic scolding, I sense deep fear and anxiety in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon T. Smith wisely observed: &#8220;It has become apparent to almost every spiritual writer of our generation that the greatest threat that the church faces in a secular age is not something external to it\u2014not secularism, Islam, or any other \u201cism\u201d or external agent\u2014but something internal, namely fear.<\/p>\n<p>Smith points to Soren Kierkegaard\u2019s prophetic <em>The Concept of Anxiety<\/em>, the poet W.H. Auden\u2019s 1947 epic poem titled <em>The Age of Anxiety<\/em>, and Henri Nouwen\u2019s claim that we all live in a \u201cculture of fear.\u201d Smith concludes: &#8220;Fear has become so pathologically present that it is no longer even recognized; it has come to be so part of the air we breathe that we do not even know it is there \u2026 [And] secular society has no capacity to look truthfully and critically at the source of this paralyzing fear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the good news of Jesus can look truthfully and powerfully and <em>hopefully<\/em> at the source of our paralyzing fear because we know the One who told us \u201c<em>Do not be afraid<\/em>.\u201d He has come. He is here. He has died for our sins and risen to give us new life. He will restore all things and wipe away every tear. He is the Source of the peace that conquers our fears and anxieties.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, each one of us needs to hear the Lord say some of the first and last words in the Gospel of Matthew, \u201c(Insert your name), do not be afraid.\u201d (Insert your name), I am with you.\u201d These are not just some clever self-help mantras.
